Things You Should Know When Buying Gold Jewelry

Most of us are familiar with the standard gold markings of 18K, 22K, etc., but not everyone knows that gold jewelry is also marked by gold percentage. Hence, you should ensure to inspect all the markings on a jewelry piece before buying. It could be that an 18K piece has a marking on it that signifies it to be not solid 18K gold, but with an 18K gold plate on the surface. Other Markings present on a gold jewelry piece could be that provided by the maker, and is a great way to track the maker of the piece.
Alloy Mixed Gold Are Not Standardized
Gold that are below 24K are hardened after mixing with alloy metals and also to bring down the cost. A mixture of silver and copper is the most popular alloy metal used with gold. As there is no standardization of the mixture percentages, the existing cost of alloy metals, desired color, or manufacturer could be the reasons for variations in hue of a gold piece from other pieces of the same karat purity gold. Hence for a better color, higher percentages of copper alloys are often mixed with lower gold purity karats for a darker and redder color. So 10K gold could have a more-gold look than a 14K gold as a result of this mix.
Patina - Changing How Your Gold Looks
As metals get oxidized over time with constant exposure to air, a darker layer is formed on top of the jewelry piece that gives a matte finish to the metal surface. The color and texture oxidation of the metal surface found on vintage items are the reasons for them to be known as having a "patina".
While some people prefer polishing their jewelry, others like going for patina. It should however be noted that vintage jewelry with patina could look darker than new jewelry of the same Karat purity. However, there could be color differences due to the differences arising from using different alloy metals in making the piece.
White Gold Is Actually Yellow
White gold is a mix of gold and silver-colored metals like palladium or nickel, and often having a plating of a layer of white rhodium over it to give it that "white gold" look. As the rhodium layer wears off over time, the true pale yellow color of the gold piece is revealed. However, when a jewelry made of white gold has its coating worn off could get back its "white gold" look with re-plating the jewelry with rhodium. There are white gold like platinum and sterling silver that will not turn yellow over time. Alternatives to white gold that will not turn yellow over time are platinum and sterling silver.

Buying Wholesale Jewelry Supplies - Do's and Don'ts

I have been making and selling jewelry for at least six years now and I can say that my customers are often impressed with the quality of jewelry pieces I sell to them, the quality of stones and other findings I use in my creations and of course the prices at which I sell my pieces.
When it comes to buying jewelry supplies, there are some tips and tricks I use. I have been in this business for years and I have spent a lot of time hunting down the best wholesalers and suppliers for the materials I use. In this post, I will share with you some ideas and some do's and don'ts that can help you choose the right supplies for your jewelry making needs.
Do's
Being able to buy wholesale jewelry supplies really makes a big difference. But some jurisdictions do not allow individuals to purchase wholesale without having a sales tax license. So the first thing that you must do is find out about the local regulations and if needed, get a sale tax license so you can purchase wholesale jewelry supplies.
You will find a number of wholesale jewelry supplies markets if you live close to a major metropolitan city. So in this case, always consider buying from the wholesaler in your local area and not online. This way you will be able to see the quality of the products in person before you make an investment. When you shop in person, you can pick the best supplies for your jewelry making needs.
Bead shows and expos are held frequently so you must also check these out because most of the time, these shows and expos carry wholesale jewelry supplies that you cannot get from your local supplier.
Whenever you buy something from a wholesaler in person, don't forget to get their business cards. Perhaps the wholesaler also has a website and the next time you order, you don't have to visit him in person. You can do it conveniently online.
Don'ts
One thing that I have found is that you should not rely on only one store. This is because if you get the best quality wholesale beads from one seller, it is not necessary that the same seller will have the best quality wholesale jewelry findings or wires or tools. You must know where you can get the best materials for your jewelry making needs and that too at the best prices.
When you have a local wholesaler where you can get quality materials, don't consider shopping online. There are risks attached when you shop online. Unless the online vendor has a very good reputation, you must not take a risk. Photos of materials can be deceptive and the descriptions can be vague. The seller may also not offer a good returns or exchange policy. In this case, you will be left with poor quality supplies that will be of little use to you.
There are some businesses which offer mail-order delivery. But, if you have to buy wholesale gemstones or semi-precious stones for your creations, you must not use these services. You must always inspect these stones in person before buying.
If you are a jewelry designer and ate looking for best quality materials, then you can visit Pandahall and shop from an extensive selection of at wholesale jewelry supplies.

March Birthstone The Aquamarine

I did not know that March has two birthstones for its month. Did you? Aquamarine and blood stone. You learn something new every day. Let's look at the Aquamarine first, sense it seems to always be mentioned first.
The Aquamarine has a rich color and has long been a symbol of youth, health and hope. Its wonders color ranges from pale to deep blue and is reminiscent of the sea. A perfect birthstone for March, the Aquamarine creates a beautiful look for spring or summer wardrobes.
The name Aquamarine meaning seawater. The name immediately brings to mind its beautiful light sky blue or the bright color of the sea.
If you close our eyes and visualize a beautiful day at a beach with Crystal blue water and the sun skipping off the waves you can picture the blue Aquamarine.
For hundreds o years, this gemstone has been a symbol of health, hope, and youth, and fidelity. They say it has eternal life since this gemstone is the color of water and the sky, It was long thought that Aquamarine had a soothing influence on married couples, making it a good 19th wedding anniversary gift. And the flower is the Daffodil, because it means the sun is always shinning when your significant other is near.Right?
This gemstone was believed to protect sailors, as well as to guarantee a safe voyage. The soothing color of aquamarine is said to cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and remain clear headed. Aquamarine is usually light in color and ranges from greenish blue to blue-green; the color is more intense in larger stones. This gemstone is mined in Brazil. It can also be found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique.
Now take the blood stone that is a stone of a different color. It has vivid red spots of iron oxide. This ancient stone was used by the Babylonians to make seals and amulets and was believed to have healing powers - especially for blood disorders. It is sometimes called the martyr's stone as legend tells that it was created when drops of Christ's blood stained some one at the foot of the cross. Usually found in riverbeds as pebbles, The main sources are India, Brazil, and Australia. There was a poem published, author unknown in 1870. This is what it said." Who in this world of ours their eyes,in March first open shall be wise,in days of peril firm and brave,And wear blood stone to their grave." That sounds kind of ominous and is the first time I've seen it mentioned instead of the Aquamarine.
Blood stone comes from heliotrope, it's a form of the abundant mineral quartz. It exists as a mass of tiny quartz crystals formed together in large lumps that show no external crystal form, yet each of the component crystals that make up the mass is a genuine crystal. This quartz variety is called chalcedony. Green chalcedony spotted with flecks of red is known as blood stone.
Even though March has two stones you invariably hear aquamarine first when thinking of a birthstone for march in fact it always seems that the blood stone is always mentioned second or not at all. When you ask anyone what their birthstone is for March they usually say aquamarine.
